Below are the most hazardous chemicals used for hair dyeing or hair colouring.
Most hair colour and dyes contain Phenylenediamine (PPD) which is known to be hazardous chemical. It can cause serious problems to the immune system, skin, nervous system, respiratory system, liver and kidneys.
Resorcinol is also harmful chemical, irritant to eyes and skin and dangerous for the environment.
Ammonia and Sulfates
Ammonia is an irritant to the skin, eyes and respiratory system, and can cause asthma and breathing difficulties. Sodium, potassium and ammonium sulfates are present in hair dyes and bleaches which can irritate skin, causes asthma and lung damage.
Hydrogen peroxide is used in hair bleaches. It is corrosive and it can damage DNA, possibly leading to cancer.
4-ABP [4 aminobiphenyl]
4-ABP has been linked to development of cancer.
Lead acetate are used in some hair colouring products prepared for gradual darkening. Lead has well-known damaging effects on the brain and nervous system.

Skin and other allergic reactions : The biggest risk to hair dye users can be allergic reactions.. It's difficult to say how many hair dye users suffer from allergic reactions, as most do not seek medical attention. However, there are many cases where allergic reactions to hair dyes have been severe or even fatal. The skin may become red, blister, itch and burn due to long term use of hair colours.
Cancer : Laboratory experiments have shown that PPD damages the DNA of human cells. Accumulated DNA damage leads to cancer.
Asthma : Breathing in PPD fumes can cause the airways to narrow, making breathing difficult. This can be a transient reaction, or can cause long-term asthma.
Damages our hair : Excessive Dyeing Damages Hair. If hair has been dyed many times, it becomes 'over-processed', which leads to brittle, dry hair that lack shine.
Atrophy of scalp skin : Long term use of hair dye or colours can cause skin atrophy and finally destroys hair follicles.
Side effects of hair perming & hair straightening
There are two types of chemicals commonly used to perm hair. Glycerol monothioglycolate, which is acidic, and ammonium thioglycolate, which is alkaline.
Alkaline perms are usually used for hair that is rough and strong, while acid perms are usually milder and are therefore used form more delicate, soft hair. Acid perms also usually require heat, while alkaline perms can typically be performed without the use of heat.
Side effects of hair perming
Hair loses its normal elasticity, making it brittle, fragile, and prone to breakage.
Scalp skin damage, which can include redness, itching, burning, and peeling.
Perm can also stop hair from re-growing, which means chemicals inhibit new hair growth. Perm can also alter hair's texture, making it frizzy.
Hair becomes dull and life less , weak and structure becomes uneven.
The use of hydrogen peroxide can also result to serious burns.
There are three types of chemicals used for hair straightening.
Guanidine calcium hydroxide.
Side effects of permanent hair straightening
The actual effect of the chemicals and the dryers is that they make the hair dry, brittle, extremely damaged and in some cases they get burnt also.
If hair is not quoted with a heat protective product, straightening could cause permanent and irreversible damage to the hair.
If the cuticle [outer layer] of the hair is damaged, it could be an irreversible damage.
The gels, sprays, heat and chemicals used in hair straightening dries the hair from the root thus making the hair brittle and hair might lose its natural texture.
